I've hosted a lot of open houses over the years.
Some have been busy from the moment the doors open. Others have been quiet afternoons with just a handful of visitors. I've welcomed first-time buyers, growing families, empty nesters, curious neighbors, and plenty of people who swore they were "just looking."
And after all those conversations, I've realized something.
People rarely walk into an open house looking for a house.
They're looking for a feeling.
They're looking for the place where Saturday mornings feel slower. Where Christmas mornings happen. Where friends gather around the kitchen island. Where they can picture themselves at the end of a long day and think, "Yep, this feels right."
That's why real estate has never been just about bedrooms, bathrooms, or square footage.
It's about life.
One of the things that always fascinates me is how differently people experience the same home. One buyer falls in love with the front porch. Another can't stop talking about the backyard. Someone else is already planning where the Christmas tree will go.
The house hasn't changed.
The story they're imagining inside it has.
I've also learned that buyers notice things sellers don't always expect. They notice how a home feels when they walk through the front door. They notice the natural light in the living room. They notice whether a space feels loved and cared for.
Most importantly, I've learned that nearly every move starts with a life change.
A new job.
A growing family.
Kids heading off to college.
A shorter commute.
A fresh start.
A new chapter.
The homes may be different, but the reason behind the move is usually the same. People are trying to create a life that fits who they are today, not who they were five years ago.
That's probably why I still enjoy hosting open houses.
Yes, I love talking about homes. But what I really enjoy are the stories. The conversations. The dreams people share when they start imagining what's next.
Because after all these years, one thing remains true:
Home has never been about the house.
It's about the life that's lived inside it.
